چکیده

We show that a regression of unsmoothed peculiar velocity measurements against peculiar velocities predicted from a smoothed galaxy density field leads to a biased estimate of the cosmological density parameter Ω, even when galaxies trace the underlying mass distribution and galaxy positions and velocities are known perfectly. The bias arises because the errors in the predicted velocities are correlated with the predicted velocities themselves. We investigate this bias using cosmological N-body simulations and analytic arguments. In linear perturbation theory, for cold dark matter power spectra and Gaussian or top hat smoothing filters, the bias in Ω is always positive, and its magnitude increases with increasing smoothing scale. This linear calculation reproduces the N-body results for Gaussian smoothing radii Rs ∼> 10h Mpc, while non-linear effects lower the bias on smaller smoothing scales, and for Rs ∼< 3h Mpc Ω is underestimated rather than overestimated. The net bias in Ω for a given smoothing filter depends on the underlying cosmological model. The effect on current estimates of Ω from velocity-velocity comparisons is probably small relative to other uncertainties, but taking full advantage of the statistical precision of future peculiar velocity data sets will require either equal smoothing of the predicted and measured velocity fields or careful accounting for the biases discussed here. Cosmological Perturbation Theory and the Spherical Collapse model - III . The Velocity divergence field & the Ω - dependence

Cosmological Perturbation Theory (PT) is a useful tool to study the cumulants of the density and velocity fields in the large scale structure of the Universe. In papers I & II of this series we saw that the Spherical Collapse (SC) model provides with the exact solution to PT at tree-level and gives a good approximation to the loop corrections (next to leading orders), indicating negligible tida...

Kinematics of the local universe IX . The Perseus - Pisces supercluster and the Tolman - Bondi model

The matter distribution around the Perseus-Pisces (PP) supercluster is studied by comparing peculiar velocities given by the Kinematics of the local universe (KLUN) galaxy sample to those predicted by Tolman-Bondi (TB) models. To restrict the TB solutions we first solve the mass of the densest part of PP. This part is identified as a sphere at (l, b) = (140.2 • , −22.0 •), d ≈ 50 h −1 Mpc havin...

Peculiar Velocities of Galaxy Clusters

We investigate the peculiar velocities predicted for galaxy clusters by theories in the cold dark matter family. A widely used hypothesis identifies rich clusters with high peaks of a suitably smoothed version of the linear density fluctuation field. Their peculiar velocities are then obtained by extrapolating the similarly smoothed linear peculiar velocities at the positions of these peaks. We...

The Velocity Field Predicted by the Optical Redshift Survey

We have used the Optical Redshift Survey (ORS; Santiago et al. 1995) to construct the gravity field due to fluctuations in the galaxy density field out to distances of 8000 km s. At large scales where linear theory applies, the comparison of this gravity field with the observed peculiar velocity field offers a powerful cosmological probe, because the predicted flow field is proportional to the ...
